The Spiritual Message of the Engagement Movie

When Jesus told parables some people simply enjoyed his stories others, who were ready to understand, walked away with deeper insight into the things of God. Jesus spoke in parables because people want to hear stories. It is a God-inspired strategy to use stories to impart spiritual truth so we refer to 'Engagement' as 'a modern day parable'. It is a stand-alone dramatic romance with an edge of suspense. For some it will simply be a story; but for those who are ready to grasp it there is a wealth of biblical truth flowing through the storyline - waiting to be explained. Engagement is a movie created as a tool for the evangelism of those outside the church and the discipleship of those within.

Some of the powerful messages of the movie are captured in lines from the dialogue. Here are a few examples of words that speak to specific groups of people, bear the following in mind as you read these lines: Christine represents the individual as part of the Bride of Christ; Joshua represents Jesus; Mitchell, Joshua's Best Man, represents the Holy Spirit; Damien represents Satan.

To those In the Church:
'Wake up.'
Mitchell to Christine
'I need you to wait for me... Please trust me I will come back.'
Joshua to Christine
'He loves you and he is coming back.'
Mitchell to Christine
'Live in hope... there is no other way.'
Joshua and his Father

To those Outside the Church:
'I'm alive.'
'Some ruins can be rebuilt -that's why I'm here.'
'I came for you.'
'You're worth dying for.'
'Marry Me.'
Joshua to Christine
'We can't force her to believe in you, she has to choose for herself.'
The Father about Christine
'Whose side are you on?' 'Take your blinkers off.'
Mitchell

To those who have Given Up:
'You let yourself lose faith in him without that faith there was no hope...
'He still loves you and he is coming back.'
'You let yourself down - you never read his word now read it!'
Mitchell to Christine about Joshua
'He knows what you've done.'
Stacey to Christine about Joshua
'Some things [that are lost] can be found again.'
'I love you, nothing you've done can change that'
'There's no way I'm letting go of you'
'Turn Around.'
Joshua to Christine

Lies from the Devil that trap us:
'How can you be so sure he's coming back?'
'How do you know you can trust him? He doesn't even call you.'
'I can't believe he's done this to you... in front of everyone. You seemed so confident that he loved you.'
'Don't forget he let you down... you shouldn't be the one to suffer.'
'At least you know now that he was never serious about marrying you.'
Damien to Christine about Joshua
'If you'd let me, I could make you the envy of everyone in town.'
Damien to Christine
'He can give me everything not least of all my pride back.'
Christine about Damien
'I practically own you now... even if it takes you the rest of your life, you will pay me back.'
'I'll accuse you of anything I want.'
Damien to Christine
'You're not good for anything now - you might as well kill yourself.'

Damien
